Cubs Weather the Storm to Support Local Youth

Sometimes, the most meaningful moments happen when conditions are far from perfect. On May 22, this truth came to life as 15 dedicated Cubs from the Barrie Phoenix Group, accompanied by 6 of their Scouters, gathered for an outdoor meeting despite challenging weather conditions. Their mission? To make a difference for the youth in their community.

The young scouts collected personal hygiene products and food items to donate to Youth Haven, demonstrating that their commitment to helping others expands beyond fair-weather volunteering. As rain fell around them, their spirits remained high, focused on the positive impact their generous contributions would have on youth experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless.

Youth Haven’s Executive Director, Lucy Gowers, attended the Cubs’ outdoor meeting, despite the soggy conditions, to personally express her gratitude for their generosity and explain how their donations would be put to immediate use. She shared stories about the organization’s impact and helped the Cubs understand the real difference their contributions would make in the lives of vulnerable youth in the community.

“It was incredible to see these young people so engaged and passionate about helping others,” said Gowers. “Their questions were thoughtful, and their dedication was evident, despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions.”

This meaningful initiative will contribute to the Cubs’ Community Service badge requirements. However, for these young scouts, the true reward was the knowledge that they could help make life a little easier for youth facing challenging circumstances.

The Barrie Phoenix Group Cubs remind us that community support takes many forms and can come from individuals of all ages. Their willingness to brave the elements for a cause they believe in exemplifies the spirit of service that strengthens our community.

To the Cubs, their Scouters, and all young people making a difference: thank you for demonstrating that every act of kindness matters, rain or shine.
